Roedale Delta Series Sound Moderators

The Roedale „Delta“ series of Moderators evolved through years of personal interest in noise reduction and experimental manufacture. Like many other Moderator manufacturers we tinkered with this, fiddled with that, trying out different baffle designs, body designs, lengths, diameters and materials in an absolute, trail and error fashion over the years. Testing moderators from other manufacturers and our own experimental models gave us an insight in to what worked and what didn't. But the actual Scientific theory and processes where beyond our reach. The big questions that always came to light where why very slight differences in internal geometry caused huge differences in performance and what relationship did internal volume and size of baffle bore have with regards to performance.
To help us further with the Scientific side of Sound Suppression and Moderation, Roedale Precision enrolled the help of a Research & Developement team, lead by Prof. Dr. Schmidt from the „University of Applied Science Osnabrück-Germany", This same R&D team had proved instrumental in the further developement of our Roedale Muzzlebrakes and where eager to help with this next project.
The project started with a first test session. This was performed on a large number of Moderators from several manufacturer's as well as the Delta Series model. ( in all 28 different moderators) in order to assertain a basic level of comparative performance. Further testing and evaluation was performed only the models achieving enough sound suppression to fall within the EU Health & Safety maximum exposure guidelines. That narrowed the field to 15 models from 11 different manufacturers plus the Delta Series and a Theory Test Model (built to test baffle geometry and equiped with inter-changable baffles).
 The peak noise level (dB) measurement was carried out in accordance with accepted international standards,  using the latest technology in sound test equipment from Bruel&Kjær. The recoil reduction was tested by University engineers using the most modern methods and equipment. (Piezoelectric force sensors) employed during our Muzzlebrake testing.

Tests conform to Internationaly Recognised Standards and where carried out using the same rifle and ammunition with and without the Moderator attached. Series of 3 shots where fired through each Moderator and the series was repeated 10 times for total of 30 shots per test session per moderator. Time frame of the project from start to finish was just over 12 months.
Delta Moderators where tested with blast baffle units 1 through to 7 installed just to verify the ammont of sound reduction achieved by the addition of each segment.
Then the R&D work started. The different types of baffle design where put through a series of simulation programs at the Universits laboratory. This evaluation work helped establish the parameters of performance, this information was incorporated into the further developement of the Delta Moderator design and the product was upgraded accordingly.
The final test sessions where performed with the upgraded Delta design. The design that is now the current production model and the design that is leading the way in the Science of Sound Suppression and Moderation of Firearms.
